Questions I get asked
What does fractional actually mean?
I’m part of your team for part of the time, for as long as it’s useful. You get senior marketing leadership that’s more affordable and flexible than a full-time hire.
Because I’m in the business, I get properly invested in it. When there’s a lot to build I can do more, and when things are running well I scale back.
How is that different from an agency?
I sit on your side of the table. I help decide what the work should be, own the outcome, and work closely with you and your team. If you need an agency or specialists, I’ll find the right ones and manage them for you.
It’s just me. Do I need a team first?
No. Plenty of my work is just me and a founder. I’ll work with you directly, and if a team would help, I’ll build a fractional one that slots in, or tell you what to hire for first, help you hire, and stay on while they settle in.
We don’t have a strategy, a plan or a budget. Is that OK?
That’s perfect. Questions like “should we have email flows?” or “is this right for us on social?” are exactly where I start. I’ll work with you to answer the questions and guide you in the direction the business needs to go. Then we put together a plan that works, and carry it out.
Can you do social media and content creation?
Yes. We build the social media strategy together, so it’s commercially aligned with your business. Then I bring in a fractional content creator or social media executive to do the execution. I manage them and stay in charge of the work.
Do you do paid ads?
Yes. I’ll work with you on the paid ads strategy, then bring in a freelance specialist to run it, and manage them for you.
Can you write our copy and press releases?
Yes. I trained as a journalist, so copywriting and communicating clearly are what I’m best at. I know what makes a good press release, what actually makes your brand newsworthy, and how to get that story into the right people’s hands. Where I don’t have the contacts, I’ll find a PR agency that does and work with them for you.
Can you build us a whole website?
It depends. If you’re happy for me to dig in and get going with a budget-friendly Shopify template, great. If you need something fancier or more bespoke, we’ll work with a trusted partner I know. I’ll always be honest when something is outside my skillset.
Can you help us launch a new product?
Yes. I’ve led more than 20 product launches, from the brief and the packaging to getting it on shelf, and the activations and campaigns that get it sold.
Can you do graphic design and photography?
For everyday design, I’ll crack on in Canva. For brand identities, templates and campaigns, I always work with trusted graphic designers.
For photography, I lead the creative direction and have the shoot done. That means the brief, the shot list, finding and briefing the photographer, and directing on the day, so you get one set of images that works across your website, email, social and retail.
Do you offer a marketing audit?
Yes. I look at everything a customer meets, from your product and price to how people find you and what they see and experience when they do. You get it in writing, with the quick wins first so you can start fixing straight away, and the bigger decisions set out after.
Can you just give us a plan to run ourselves?
Yes. A strategy session or a marketing audit both end with a written plan you can run with or without me.
How much does it cost?
Everything is shaped around your business, so there’s no fixed menu. We start with a free 30-minute call, I find out what you need, then I come back with an accurate quote.
Who do you work with?
Founders, MDs and business leaders at start-ups, independents, small businesses and challenger brands, mostly in food, drink, hospitality and FMCG, across direct-to-consumer, retail, wholesale and venues. If you’re outside that and think I could help, get in touch anyway.
When shouldn’t we work together?
We’re probably not the right fit if you want someone to tick off a to-do list, or to agree with everything. I’ll push back when something isn’t right for the business. Marketing also works best, and most efficiently, when it runs across the whole business, not in its own box, so you’ll need to be open to learning along the way.
Where are you based?
Edinburgh. I work with businesses across the UK, remotely and in person when it helps.
Something else?
Just ask.
